  • Cornish phase sayings

Here at Parklink we think Cornwall is amazing! As a family owned business based in the West Country we have become accustomed to cornish sayings and quotes! Cornish is a wonderful language in itself and one not many people actual speak! As you’ll see here the odd cornish saying is still very much in circulation with no chance of going anywhere. You’ll love our infographic below which you are free to share provided you link back to the Parklink website.

The cornish sayings you’re about to read are some of the most common you’ll find. Of course with a quick google search you can uncover many more cornish gems and with slightly different interpretations.

    6 ‘proper’ cornish sayings

    1.) “proper”

Proper can mean ‘well done’ or ‘proper job’ meaning complete job or job well done!

    2.) “I’llitellywot”

Means, your not going to believe this!

    3.) “Ansom”

This is really nice – Often used when eating a Cornish pasty or enjoying a cold glass of Rattler cider.

    4.) “Dreckly”

One of the favourites and means the job will get done when its done! Frustrating for non Cornish folk!

    5.) “Awright’n aree”

Saying alright to someone and checking on well-being

    6.) “Ullon Yaw”

    Wait a minute!

    The Cornish accent

The pronunciation of these cornish phases can take some getting used however you should be able to listen out for them when next in Cornwall! The Cornish language has slightly changed over the years with the internet and mobility of people around the UK and world. Youngsters have mixed the Cornish accent with many others so not represents quite a laid back tone as opposed to a strong twang. Many folk up country (Cornish saying for anybody on the other side of the Tamar bridge) consider the Bristol accent to represent Cornish which isn’t true because the Bristol accent has far more twang to it!
